Cold Weather Starting Tips
Don’t let the winter cold bite you in the…uh…rear bumper.
Keep your battery charged
To ensure your battery doesn’t freeze.
KEEP WARM
Keep your battery and fluids warm using a plug-in battery blanket and lower radiator hose inline coolant heater.
“COLD SEASON” DIESEL
Always try to fill with “cold season” diesel fuel based on your region. (Don’t know if your fuel has proper seasonal additives? No problem, you can purchase a bottled additive to summer season fuel to prevent gelling.)
Don’t just start cranking
Turn your key to the “Run” position and wait for the “wait to start” indicator on your cluster to turn off. It looks like a double loop dee loop or pig’s tail.
5 SECOND RULE
Do not crank for more than 5 seconds. If engine doesn’t fire up, repeat the wait to start cycle again.
In extreme cold weather conditions, below 15°F even a fully charged battery may need additional assistance such as a jump pack or another vehicle and jumper cables.
